Fate is a fickle beast, and for Petrah of Acia, fate is not on his side.
A prophecy has foretold the end of the world at the hand of the Son of Darkness. His name is Aman, heralded as the Great One by the priests who follow the dark god. Petrah has seen the Great One in his visions, first as a slave and then as a mage apprentice. Through these revelations, Petrah has sought the mystery to his own identity, lost since childhood. Visited by the enigmatic Watcher, an agent of the dark god, Petrah learns the terrible truth: he, too, is a Son of Darkness, and he’s destined to play a pivotal role in Aman’s war against the followers of the God of Light.
Across a portal lies a dying land where Aman is marshaling a massive army, an army he will bring to Acia to crush his enemies and usher in a reign of terror. The Dark That Begins
The boy hid among the golden barley grass as the sun dipped in the west, careful to keep his head below the tops of the swaying grain, lest he risk getting caught. Getting caught, he was certain, would be the end of him.
He was wary of the fieldworkers with the sickles, but more wary of the armed men with the hungry eyes watching them, daggers belted at their waists. They twisted their blades with restless hands, as if looking for trouble.
He’d waited all afternoon in the merciless heat, hoping the workers and guards would go away so he could sneak into the farmhouse. He licked his chapped lips and held a hand over his grumbling belly. If he was right, he’d find food and drink inside.
If he was wrong—
No. He had to be right.
He dashed from the barley field and slipped through the farmhouse door. Murk and shadows swallowed him, but he found a bucket of water and drank until he coughed. Then he found it: a wheel of cheese. He dug his fingers into the soft center and stuffed the crumbles into his mouth, salty and glorious.
A voice cut through the dark.
He dropped the cheese.
Two men stood in the doorway, one with a heavy gut, the other carrying a lamp. They shouted in a tongue he didn’t understand.
They were bigger than him.
Stronger than him.
But were they faster?
The boy bolted.
He sprinted down the dirt road as shouts and a shrill whistle sounded behind him. Then came the barking.
Torchlight flared in the deepening dusk. Fast-moving shadows closed in.
He cut toward the river. Maybe if he got into the water—
Could he swim?
The barking grew louder.
He burst through the trees—
And found snarling dogs blocking his escape. The beasts growled and snapped, ready to spring.
He stood frozen as his pursuers arrived.
They didn’t need to translate their words for him to understand what he’d known all along: getting caught would be the end of him.
The man with the greasy jowls and cruel eyes ordered the boy fettered and locked in a shed for the night.
The next day, he stood before a magistrate.
The day after, he was sold into slavery.
Four years later, he was fluent in their language, but he couldn’t remember his past from before the day they’d caught him. Nor could he remember his name.
But the slavers gave him one.
A name in the old tongue that described the impossible color of his eyes—blue as the sky itself.
Petrah.
They named him Petrah.
