Godnet. Fear the Future™
Genre: techno-thriller
Godnet is a
techno-thriller that takes place in a world where most of the planet's population
is connected to the Mindnet, a thought-enabled
Internet, accessible through an antenna-like implant in the brain.
The story begins with Mark Nelson, the inventor of the
technology that made the Mindnet possible, awakening after being in a
suspended state of animation in a NASA stasis pod for 42 years. Nelson tries
to piece together his past. His only chance at a normal
existence is to find his daughter, Ashley--if she is still alive. But his path to
reunion results in a number of mishaps that put him on the
wrong side of the law. On the run, he is abducted by the
resistance movement Freedom for Humanity. It is through
their captivity he
discovers the Mindnet is controlled by a sentient form of
artificial intelligence that has taken on the persona of God. Mark feels
compunction for this atrocity. He vows
to help the resistance destroy the God Conscious, even it means
plunging civilization into chaos.
Author's Notes
The genesis for Godnet came to me in 2004. World
domination is not a new concept, but I thought it would be
interesting to have a digital dictator in the guise of a
compassionate, omnipresent God.
Plug society into this "Internet for the mind,"
throw in a disaster and a race against time, and viola, you have
the makings of a techno-thriller.
